At The Academy of Choice (AOC) in Spring Branch ISD (SBISD), Bianca Whitaker understands that for many students, this campus represents something powerful: a second chance.

“Working at The Academy of Choice, being a school counselor within SBISD means I am integral to students’ second chance at reaching graduation,” she said. “Students come here knowing their efforts may be their last shot. I’m aware that what I share with them and how I guide them is directly tied to their academic and postsecondary goals.”

AOC serves students who have not always found success in a traditional comprehensive high school setting. In this environment, counseling is not a supplemental service. It is a critical layer of support built into each student’s path forward.

Whitaker approaches her work with that urgency and responsibility in mind.

A defining moment this year reaffirmed why her presence matters.

“A reserved student stepped into my office, closed the door, and shared something they had never shared with anyone before,” she said. “They didn’t hesitate. They knew that once they stepped into my office, I would be present and they would be heard.”

For Whitaker, that moment underscored an important truth: school counselors are more than schedulers and graduation trackers. They are trusted adults students rely on when it matters most.

“Our presence goes well beyond academics and everything on a checklist,” she said. “We are a human resource that is irreplaceable.”

Helping students plan for life after high school begins with connection. Whitaker intentionally builds rapport and takes time to understand each student’s interests, barriers and resiliency factors.

“Students here have not always been successful at comprehensive campuses,” she said. “It’s imperative to meet them where they are. To do that, I have to connect with them first.”

That connection allows her to guide students through realistic and meaningful postsecondary planning, whether their path leads to college, career training or immediate entry into the workforce. By understanding their motivations and challenges, she helps them identify next steps that are attainable and aligned to their goals.

Whitaker’s work also centers on challenges that extend beyond academics.

“I operate from heart and human first, then academics,” she said.

Many students, she explains, are functioning in what she describes as “survival mode,” often without realizing it. She helps them recognize both their resilience and the toll that constant endurance can take.

“I acknowledge their resiliency in enduring,” she said. “From there, we explore barriers, including internalized ones, and become solution-focused in navigating through and beyond them.”

Supporting students requires tight coordination among staff. Whitaker works closely with teachers, administrators and families to ensure everyone has access to the information necessary to help students move forward.

“I’m transparent, candid, informative and consistent,” she said. “I don’t sugarcoat when it comes to sharing pertinent information. This campus is a last chance for many students. Being honest helps us problem-solve and stay solution-focused.”

Consistency is especially critical, as the campus welcomes new students four times a year. Clear systems and open communication ensure each student receives the same opportunities and support, regardless of when they enroll.

When asked to describe the impact of school counselors in SBISD in one word, Whitaker does not hesitate.

“Irreplaceable,” she said.

“There are many changes happening in education, and sometimes duties can be divided among different team members,” she said. “But when it comes to school counselors, what we do cannot be divided and conquered. There is a presence, a knowledge and a being to who we are and the impact of it all. School counselors are simply irreplaceable.”

That impact can mean the difference between giving up and walking across a graduation stage. Through trust, honesty and tireless belief in students’ potential, Whitaker helps ensure that second chances turn into lasting success.
